Virginia Corrections Release Paths
VADOC operates the state prison system and Community Corrections. No VADOC prison was identified inside Pittsylvania County in the official directory reviewed for this project. A Pittsylvania defendant sentenced to more than 12 months normally becomes state-responsible, even when housed for a time at Pittsylvania County Jail or a BRRJA site. A local booking can therefore end with delivery to VADOC. That is a transfer, not community release.
A state prisoner can leave confinement by discharge or parole. Discharge can mean the active custody term ends, while parole is conditional release for a legally eligible sentence. Probation may follow a sentence without proving that the person served a prison term. VADOC may also show CCAP participants, people in institutional hospitals, and state-responsible people housed locally. Always read the status and location together.
| VADOC result | What it establishes | What remains unresolved |
|---|---|---|
| State institution | Current state confinement at the listed location | Future date and later custody changes |
| District supervision | Community probation or parole through VADOC | Full discharge and prior release details |
| Projected date | Current sentence forecast | Actual departure, holds, and final calculation |
| Signed release papers | Terms and date for the completed state event | Any later independent custody |
Confirm Virginia Corrections Releases
The VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator searches the population currently under state custody or supervision. Use the seven-digit DOC ID when known. A name search requires the first three letters of the first name and the full last name. Optional location, race, gender, and age-range filters can narrow a match. VADOC updates the tool daily and warns that details may be wrong or stale.
A positive district-office result is strong evidence of community supervision. It is not complete discharge. A blank result is not a historical archive result and cannot prove release. The person may be fully discharged, outside the public categories, never state-responsible, or mismatched. Use this sequence:
- Match the person by DOC ID, court case, and sentence.
- Open the locator detail and preserve each status, office, and date label.
- Separate a future projection from a completed release date.
- Check NAAVI or VADOC Victim Services for the applicable state event.
- Obtain the release letter, Order of Release, or conditions document when needed.
- Confirm later supervision with the district shown in the record.
The official VADOC search is shown in the successful capture below.

The locator is the right statewide entry point, while signed documents establish the actual release more firmly.
Note: A district-office result means community supervision, not full discharge from every VADOC obligation.
Virginia Corrections Date Labels
Projected Release Date is verified on the official NAAVI detail. A projection is a forecast based on the current sentence computation. VADOC's advance-release notice is an anticipated event, generally issued about 30 days ahead, and it can change. A parole decision is a separate Board action. The release-date notification means VADOC custody ended. These four labels should never be compressed into one date.
Time computation can change with jail credit, sentence type, earning level, discipline, later court orders, uncalculated sentences, warrants, and detainers. The familiar 85-percent phrase is not universal. Code § 53.1-202.3 caps enumerated offenses at 4.5 credits per 30 days, while qualifying other offenses may earn 15, 7.5, 3.5, or zero per 30 at four levels. The live offender file, not a simple calculator, governs the date.
Good Conduct Allowance applies to older groups described by VADOC, including felony offenses before January 1, 1995 and misdemeanors before July 1, 2008. Its class rate can range from zero to 30 days for each 30 served. VADOC also calculates discretionary-parole eligibility, mandatory-parole release, and good-time release for covered combined active terms over 12 months. Offense date and sentence type must be fixed before any date is interpreted.
Virginia Corrections Records and Contact
When the current locator does not resolve an inactive or fully discharged record, use the VADOC FOIA and records route. Include the DOC ID, full name, custody episode, and the smallest defined record set. Useful items include the notification-of-release letter, Order of Release, Conditions of Probation or Parole, and the releasable date and destination fields. Security, health, and personal parts of an offender file may be withheld.

Ask for electronic copies, a cost estimate, and segregable nonexempt fields. For a disputed time computation, the incarcerated person may write the Correspondence Unit or Court and Legal Section. A public requester should use the records contact and identify the exact field believed to be wrong.
VADOC Release Notices and NAAVI
VADOC Victim Services uses NAAVI for state custody and supervision notices. It is separate from Virginia Jail VINE, which covers local and regional jails. State event choices include advanced release, actual release date, transfer, work release, parole interview, parole decision, escape, recapture, and death. An advanced-release notice is an anticipated event and can change. The actual release-date notice means the person is no longer in VADOC custody.
Registration does not transfer from Pittsylvania or BRRJA Jail VINE into NAAVI. After a person moves into state responsibility, register through the state system for the correct VADOC record. Code § 53.1-160 concerns VADOC notices to courts, officials, and qualifying registered victims. It does not create a public historical release archive, so a missing notification search should not be used as proof of full discharge.
The official VADOC notification definitions are shown in the successful capture below.

The notice types help preserve the difference between a forecast, a parole action, a transfer, and the completed end of state custody.
VADOC Release Property and Travel
The VADOC Facility Release page describes state-prison logistics only. Staff return personal property and use a property-envelope receipt for identity and education documents. Account funds are returned, and VADOC may supplement a balance below $25 under its rule. Clothing, transportation, and medication may also be supplied under the applicable policy.
Records staff review warrants, detainers, continued-custody orders, classification effects, discipline, and uncalculated sentences before departure. The page says discharge or parole release occurs by 11:59 p.m. on the date, weather permitting. Do not apply that statewide VADOC timing to Pittsylvania County Jail or BRRJA. No routine local release time was verified.
The VADOC release process appears below.

The official page ties the actual state event to final records review, property, funds, and signed documents.
Detainers After Virginia Corrections Release
A detainer or continued-custody order can change the destination. VADOC may end one custody basis while transferring the person to another state, local, federal, or immigration authority. The release document should be read with the destination field and the receiving agency's record. A handoff to ICE or USMS is not release to the community.
For a Pittsylvania case, compare the VADOC event with the court order and any receiving-custodian locator. If the person begins community supervision, the listed VADOC district is proof of supervised status, not full discharge. Danville District 14 serves Pittsylvania County when that is the assigned office, though the live record may show another district after relocation.
Virginia Jail VINE does not replace the state notification route. A local VINE alert can mark transfer from Pittsylvania or BRRJA into VADOC, after which registration must be made through NAAVI for state events. VADOC notices distinguish transfer, advanced release, release date, parole interview, and parole decision. Keep the selected event and its notification time separate from the physical release record.
Pittsylvania Jail and VADOC History
Pittsylvania's courthouse jail and the five-facility BRRJA network are separate from VADOC. The older local jail was rated for 36, and the county has long used BRRJA for overflow while planning a 146-bed replacement expandable to 202. Those local figures explain why a state-responsible person may pass through more than one site before reaching VADOC. They do not describe a VADOC prison.
The preliminary county schedule called for construction from August 2026 to November 2027. It does not prove the replacement is open. When tracing a state case, use the local release or transfer entry to mark the end of the jail booking, then the VADOC record for state custody. The Pittsylvania County released inmate search helps identify which system holds the next record.
Identity must follow the move. Match the Pittsylvania or BRRJA booking number to the court case, then use the seven-digit DOC ID in VADOC. Similar names are not enough. Preserve Book Date, local Release Date, VADOC location, Projected Release Date, and final state release as separate fields. If a local Release Date precedes VADOC admission, the sequence supports transfer rather than community release.
Note: A BRRJA Release Date at VADOC transfer ends the regional booking but does not end the state sentence.
