Find Federal Bureau Prison Releases

To find someone released from Federal Bureau of Prisons institutions nationwide, use the federal locator only when the person served a federal sentence. A Pittsylvania County arrest, home address, or temporary local bed does not make a case federal. The BOP record can show a historic federal release, but departure from BOP custody does not rule out supervised release, state or local custody, or an immigration hold. Identity must be matched with a federal number or careful name details. The federal court and agency records then explain what followed the listed event.

Federal Bureau Release Meaning

The Federal Bureau of Prisons runs the federal prison system. No BOP institution was identified in Pittsylvania County. The system is relevant only to a federal defendant or sentenced federal prisoner. A person held for the U.S. Marshals Service at a local jail may never appear as an ordinary sentenced BOP record for that pretrial stay. Use the federal docket and USMS records for those movements.

A past BOP release date with no current facility, or a result labeled “Released,” establishes departure from BOP custody for that record. It does not establish freedom from all custody. Federal supervised release may follow. A state detainer, local warrant, or ICE handoff can also control the next destination. “In Transit” is not release, and a Community Corrections Management location can still reflect BOP responsibility.

Search Federal Bureau Releases

The BOP Inmate Locator supports a name search and several federal identifier searches. A number is the safest match when available. The accepted identifiers include BOP Register, DCDC, FBI, and INS numbers. Name results display the name, register number, age, race, sex, release date, and location. Compare the full record with the federal case before deciding that two similar names are the same person.

BOP says its electronic locator includes federal inmates released after 1982. Older federal prison records may require the National Archives. A future date is projected and can change after recalculation. A past date and released or no-location status is evidence for the end of BOP custody, while the federal docket can identify the sentence and later supervised-release proceedings.

  1. Confirm that the case is federal rather than a Pittsylvania or Virginia prosecution.
  2. Search by BOP Register or another accepted number when known.
  3. For a name search, compare age and the full federal case identity.
  4. Record the exact release date, location, and status labels.
  5. Check the federal docket and U.S. Probation for supervision.
  6. Resolve any state, local, USMS, or ICE custody separately.

The official BOP locator is shown below.

The nationwide tool is appropriate for federal imprisonment, not a substitute for Pittsylvania jail, BRRJA, or VADOC records.

Note: A BOP past release date confirms federal departure only, so check supervision and any receiving agency before stating community release.

Federal Bureau Locator Fields

Keep each BOP field in its proper role. The register number strongly identifies the federal record. Age, race, and sex can help distinguish same-name results but should not replace the number or case. Location states where BOP reports the person or whether no active institution is listed. Release Date can be future or past, so its direction in time changes the conclusion.

A future date is a forecast. It may change with sentence recalculation, credit, court action, or other federal events. A past date can show the completed end of BOP custody for covered records. It does not show whether U.S. Probation began supervised release that day, whether USMS held the person on another matter, or whether ICE took custody. Preserve the date and status exactly rather than translating them into a broader claim.

BOP Register number
The primary identifier for the federal prison record.
Release Date
A projected date when future or a BOP departure date when past in a released record.
Location
The institution or BOP-related placement shown for the record.
Supervised release
A court-ordered federal community term that can continue after BOP imprisonment.

BOP Records After 1982

The electronic locator's date boundary matters in a Pittsylvania search. BOP states that it covers prisoners released after 1982. An older person can be absent for that reason even when a federal incarceration record exists. Follow the locator's official records explanation to the National Archives instead of calling the absence proof that no federal episode occurred.

For covered records, preserve the register number and exact result. A historical “Released” entry supplies a past federal date and no active prison location. Compare it with the judgment and docket. If the court later modified supervision or issued another warrant, that event belongs to the federal case record, not the old locator line.

Federal Bureau Records Contact

The locator's official records explanation describes coverage and the meaning of released records. When the electronic result is too old or incomplete, follow its National Archives guidance for pre-1982 material. For a current federal sentence or release issue, identify the register number, federal court case, and the precise record needed. Do not ask Pittsylvania County to create a federal prison record it does not hold.

For a USMS pretrial or transport episode, use the federal docket and the U.S. Marshals records route. A local jail can confirm its own booking and transfer, but it may not know the full federal chain after the person leaves its physical site.

Federal Detainers After BOP Release

A federal release can lead to community supervision, a state or local handoff, or immigration custody. BOP itself cautions that a released person may remain under another criminal-justice or law-enforcement agency. If the result shows a past date, check the federal docket for supervised release. Then search the receiving state, local, or immigration agency when a detainer or transfer appears.

A detainer is a request or order that another authority be notified or receive the person. It can prevent a BOP departure from becoming community freedom. ICE custody requires the ICE locator. A Virginia warrant may lead to local or state custody. Phrase the conclusion narrowly: the person left BOP custody on the listed date, and any later custody was confirmed only if the receiving source was checked.

BOP release is system-specific. A released federal record does not exclude supervised release or custody by another authority.

Pittsylvania Jail and Federal History

Pittsylvania County's jail system is separate from BOP. The older courthouse jail was rated for 36, and the county has long used the five-facility BRRJA network for overflow while planning a 146-bed replacement expandable to 202. A federal defendant may be boarded locally for USMS, but those local facts do not turn the jail into a federal prison or make BRRJA part of BOP.

The preliminary replacement schedule runs from August 2026 through November 2027 and does not prove the new jail is open. When a federal defendant leaves a Pittsylvania or BRRJA booking, ask whether USMS received the person. The local Release Date ends that booking. The federal docket, USMS record, and later BOP result carry the chain forward.

Confirm Federal Community Release

Three records answer three questions. The local jail record shows when a temporary Pittsylvania or BRRJA bed assignment ended. The BOP locator shows federal imprisonment and a covered release date. The federal court docket states sentence and supervised-release terms. ICE or a state agency must confirm any later handoff. Do not combine them without matching the register number, case number, and dates.

The Pittsylvania County released inmate search path helps decide whether the first record belongs to the county, BRRJA, VADOC, or a federal system. For a federal case, a sound statement names BOP and its date, then describes supervision or later custody only from the separate official source. A missing local roster entry adds no proof.

Dates should keep their source labels. The local Book Date begins a jail episode, a federal judgment date records court action, the BOP Release Date ends federal prison custody when past, and a supervision start marks a different legal stage. If the locator presents only a calendar date, do not invent midnight or a door-release time.

Note: Use the federal case number and BOP register number together when names or release dates conflict across systems.
